Administrative history

St. Cloud State University was established by the state of Minnesota in 1869 as the Third State Normal School.

Scope and content

This series contains academic transcripts of St. Cloud State students who attended the university between the 1870s and 1940.

Information about each student that attended and/or graduated from St. Cloud State University include the classes they attended, the term the class was taken, and the grade received.  If the student graduated, a pledge was signed to teach in public schools in Minnesota. The transcript provides information where and when the student taught.

In addition, the transcripts are a wealth of biographical information about the student.  Information includes: when and to what class admitted, age when admitted, graduation date, residence, birthplace, high school attended, last school attended, and name, occupation, and nationality of parents.

System of arrangement

The transcripts are roughly organized by date. Each of the 15 volumes covers a time period.  Some volumes likely overlap with dates with each other.

Within each volume, students were recorded as they entered St. Cloud State.  At the beginning of each volume, there is an alphabetical index.  Within each letter of the alphabet, students are listed, but not in alphabetical order.  After each name is a page number for that volume in which the student appears.

Records are located at 53B.4a-11a.

Conditions governing access

Any record that is not at least 90 years old is restricted.

The exception to to the 90 year restriction is is if the student has been dead at least 10 years (Minnesota statute 13.10) and the information was created at least 30 years ago.  In addition, students are presumed dead if the information was created at least 90 years ago or 90 years have elapsed since the individual's birth, whichever is earlier, except that an individual is not presumed to be dead if readily available data indicate that the individual is still living.
