        History

The Department of Mass Communications was established in 1972. It brought together the relatively new Department of Journalism (established in 1967) and elements from the Department of Speech (radio and television).

John DeSanto was hired from Bemidji State to become the department's first chair.

Records consulted include the records of the President (1965-1971, 1970-1975) and a August 24, 1972 press release.
