John T. Clawson Papers

This collection consists of constituent correspondences and subject correspondences of various topics. The subject correspondences cover a wide range of political topics in which Clawson showed interest in during his time in office. Within the subject correspondences are a wide range of miscellaneous material such as press releases, meeting minutes, campaign materials, newsletters, invitations, newspaper clippings, speeches, memos, reports, and weekly schedules. The collection is divided into two series: Constituent Correspondence and Subjects of Interest.

These series contains records about St. Cloud State University commencement, dating from 1871 to 2009. Additions to this series will be ongoing.

Arranged chronologically, the main focus of the records are the programs. Programs were issued for each ceremony, listing names of those who graduated and the degree that was received. Early programs do not list graduates, but instead just the events surrounding commencement.

Starting in 2000, commencement was split into two: one for undergraduate students and one for graduate students. Thus, there were two programs. It later combined into a single program.

Other material is contained here, including invitations, speeches of commencement speakers, and audio and video of commencement, dating back to 1968.

The commencement records are split into four separate series.

Series 1: Reference Copy

This series contains the most complete run of SCSU commencement programs. There is one copy for each commencement program that the Archives has.

Series 2: Archives Copy

This series contains, when possible, two copies of each commencement program. Commencement programs here are duplicated in Series 1.

Series 3: Other Material

Contained in this series are invitations, schedules, and other material related to the commencement ceremony. Text of speeches, dated mostly from the 1960s, are in this series as well.

Series 4: Audio/Visual

This series has audio and video of commencement programs dating back to 1968. Some years there is only audio, which is on either cassette tape or reel to reel. Video exists here for many commencement ceremonies, especially after 1999, though there is earlier video. Video formats include VHS and DVD.

This collection contains records from the Department of English at St. Cloud State University. Items in this collection date from 1960 to the 2000s, the majority of which are from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. This collection contains various administrative records, brochures, and publications.

These records are arranged in two series:

Series 1: Administrative Records

This series contains a variety of administrative records. Information relating to personnel, committee and department minutes, budgets, course lists, enrollment, and department publications and projects are found here. There is also information on the Write Place and its predecessors.

Series 2: Publications and Conferences on Sinclair Lewis

Divided into two sub-series, this series contains records relating to St. Cloud State Department of English publications and conferences relating to the Nobel Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis. Most of the series relates to the 1985 Sinclair Lewis Centennial Conference, hosted by St. Cloud State University in honor of the 100th anniversary of Lewis's birth. Also included are programs of conferences held in honor of Lewis and his friend and confidant, Ida K. Compton, in 2005 and 2007, copies of the Sinclair Lewis Newsletter from the late 1960s through mid-1970s, and cassette tapes of the 1971 radio production: Sinclair Lewis's Minnesota: A State of Mind.

This collection contains the records of the Library Tri-D Club.  The record book was compiled in 1940 by head librarian Edith Grannis, however the records within the book span 1930-1940. Records included are the constitution and code of loyalties, meeting minutes, and photographs.

William M. Lindgren Papers

The William M. Lindgren Papers are organized by series. The bulk of the material are images, mostly slides, that date just after World War II until his death in October 1993.

Series 1: Personal Papers

Organized into three sub-series, these materials focus on many aspects of Lindgren's life. Materials related to his academic career as a student and St. Cloud State faculty member are here, including two lectures (with recordings), his master thesis from the University of British Columbia, and various certificates and diplomas.

There is significant biographical information here as well. His autobiography, done in 1993 before he passed away, is key and tells Lindgren's life story through his own words. Lindgren's passports are important as they document the places he traveled for almost 50 years.

In addition, there is some correspondence with pen pals (as well as his parents) from all over the world.

Series 2: Photo Albums

The photo albums document mostly Lindgren's travels for almost fifty years. The photo albums that date before 1970 are particularly important, as they show Lindgren's extensive travels throughout Asia, including China, India, and the Middle East. The early albums show Lindgren as a young man before, during, and just after World War II are significant as well, especially the album that focuses on a visit to Yellowstone Park in 1940-1941.

The photo albums after 1970 are primarily Lindgren traveling when he was semi-retired or retired. The albums also include images of family activities in Cambridge or other Minnesota locations.

The photo albums in boxes 3 through 6 each include an index of the images and the descriptions that Lindgren gave them and with some commentary. These descriptions were created by student Christina T. Markwood-Rod in the early 2000s. In addition, some of the photo albums have been scanned to provide easier access.

Series 3: Print Images and Negatives

Dating primarily from the 1970s through the early 1990s, this series includes both print images and negatives. These images focus on Lindgren's world travels.

Some print images in this series do have negatives and are kept together.  The negatives were organized here as Lindgren had organized them. The description was taken from the negative/photo envelope, which were written by Lindgren or Markwood-Rod.  Those negatives that did not have photographs with them were kept together as units. These negatives, especially those from the 1980s and early 1990s, are for some of the images in the photo albums in series 2.

Significant images include the portraits of Lindgren as a young man and as he aged over time, including his passport photos. There are images of his parents, Roy and Rudy Lindgren, as children, young adults, and as they aged, too.

Series 4: Slides

Sub-series 1: Slide Presentations

This sub-series contains color slides, as organized by Lindgren, of his travels while working, especially in Asia during the 1940s through the early 1960s. Many of the slides have descriptions written on them by Lindgren. Locations featured include China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Macao (China).

These slides were used by Lindgren for presentations to his classes and for other events.

Sub-series 2: Other slides

This sub-series contains color slides and described as "unused", as opposed to the slides in sub-series 1. These slides were organized by location by Lindgren. The majority of slides have descriptions written on them by Lindgren, as well as lists that were on slide storage cases in Lindgren's hand.  Dating from the 1950s through the 1960s, locations visited include Australia, England, France, Greece, Nepal, North America, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland.

All the slides from both sub-series have been digitized as lower resolution JPEG images and available in an instance of Omeka. Each folder in this series was created as a separate collection in Omeka. Also, each image has been given a unique image ID number, starting with "LGR".

Information was added into the description field for individual slides if there was any to add. That information came from what Lindgren wrote directly on the slide as well as anything that was on list from the slides storage box. These lists were only from Sub-series 2: Other Slides. When the writing was hard to read, we did the best we could to transcribe it and then added a question mark in brackets. Anything that was added by Archives' staff was always put into brackets, especially if the slide was not identified but the landmark was easily recognized.

Records of the Normal School Recorder
22 · Colección · 1916-1918

10 monthly issues of the Normal School Recorder were published by students between 1916 and 1918.

The Normal School Recorder was a mix of a traditional newspaper and journal. Most of each issue was devoted to journal articles that were written by St. Cloud State students. Articles focused a great deal on campus; students wrote about family members, travel, athletics, student literary clubs, arrival and departure of faculty, and experience with others or events on campus. The publication often reported on the whereabouts and happenings of recent graduates. Especially fascinating were the stories about World War I, many documenting what was happening on campus, as well as the experiences of students and alums who were serving as soldiers.

Melvin Miller Papers

The Melvin Miller Papers consist of 13 boxes. The majority of items in this collection date from 1970 to 1974. The collection includes personal correspondence to and from constituents, copies of materials relating to bills before the Minnesota Legislature from 1972 to 1974 concerning the committees he served on, personal interests, and the interests of his constituents. Also included are the election and campaign materials for his 1972 election and 1974 re-election.

Mitchell Family Papers

These materials focus on the family of Henry Z. and Elizabeth Mitchell. They arrived in St. Cloud in 1857 and had three children - William B., Mary, and Charles.

The materials here focus on the Mitchell family in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Mitchell homes at 508 and 509 1st Avenue South play a prominent role. A scrapbook highlights the life of the tea rooms at Grandmother's Garden, established by Ruth Mitchell in 1922.  Grandmother's Garden was the first home of Henry Z. and Elizabeth Mitchell.

There are is a family photo album that contains images of the Mitchell extended family.  Other images include the Mitchell Home at 508 1st Avenue South, which sits on the site of the current Mitchell Hall residence hall.  There are also memories of that home written by Mitchell Family members.

Other materials in this collection include property records, the appointment certificate of William B. Mitchell as St. Cloud State's resident director, art lectures by Mary Mitchell Burbank, and clippings in a scrapbook of the travels of William B. Mitchell and Mary Mitchell Burbank.

St. John's Episcopal Church Records

The St. John's Episcopal Church is a fairly complete collection containing financial records, history of the church, and information of the guilds and committees of St. John's from 1856 to 1978. Included in the collection are pictures of the old and new churches. There much correspondence by Charles H. Richter, an active member of St. John's.

Newspaper Clippings and photographs contains newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to the church and its members. The Financial Reports consists of budget reports, bonds, and mortgage certificates of the church. Series 3 contains miscellaneous materials from the church. A church history, information on the policies of church government, building and construction committees, and weekly church bulletins are all within this series as well. Various committees and clubs at St. John's Episcopal Church has information about the various clubs and committees. The Bishop Morrison Guild, the St. John's Improvement League, Church Aid Society, St. John's Guild are all within this series. Series 5 contains information connected with Women's Guilds and Societies at St. John's Episcopal Church. St. Anne's Altar Guild, St. Martha's Guild, Women of St. John’s, and Women's Auxiliary can be found in this series. The Oversized Series, contains the oversized materials from the various series in one box. These items are scrapbooks, a membership roll, and a cash book. Correspondence and miscellaneous materials are arranged chronologically in folders to what aspect of the church the material covers.

The handbook was meant to orient students, both new and returning, on university policies, history, campus maps, songs, registration and withdrawal from classes, student groups, area churches, and student conduct.

These records document 28 years of the club activities, mainly the preperation, production, and evaluation of their yearly swim show. The records contain the yearly evaluation of the show, the committee members and thier notes, as well as the script and choreography for that year's show. Also included are original tickets and programs along with newspaper clippings, prints, negatives, and slides.

The collection also contains minutes from official club meetings from 1957-1960 and 1964-1971. In addtion, there is a seperate booklet containing the club's budget between 1962 and 1974. Lastly, this collection includes scrapbooks created by club members that detail the swim shows and other club activities such as Homecoming and the annual post show banquet.

The Department of Teacher Development is a combination of the former derpartments of Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Student Teaching. The items covered include meeting minutes for Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Student Teaching, Administrative files, reports, and publications from the department.

The collection is arranged into three series.

This series contains departmental meeting minutes from Teacher Development, Student Teaching, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. it is the bulk of material held in the collection.

Series 2: Reports, 1954-1991

Series 2 contains evaluation reports from Student Teaching, Teacher Development, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education.

Series 3: Administrative Files, 1952 - 2011

This series contains the rest of the files for the collection, including publications, student teaching handbooks, scholarships, IGNITE Teacher Preparation Initiative, Task Group II, British Education Workshop, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Distinguished Achievment Award, CMTEC files, and student teacher support documents.

This collection contains records from the Department of Theatre, Film Studies, and Dance at St. Cloud State University.  There are 32 boxes and five oversized folders in the collection; the items date from 1956-2007 with the vast majority of the items pertaining to the theatre division. Additions to this series may be ongoing.

The collection is arranged into three series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1961-2007

This series includes minutes from staff meetings, building plans, correspondence, and the theatre department’s newsletter, amongst other items.

Series 2: Play Files, 1956-2011

Here is where the bulk of the collection can be found.  The play files, which are alphabetical order by play title, include photographs, posters, and programs for productions that were performed at St. Cloud State University.  There are also records in this series that pertain to SCSU theatre students and producers who took their performances overseas.  The first performances abroad were at military outposts located in Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and Baffin Island in 1961.  They would go on to perform in Germany for the military in 1964.  And in 1987, actors traveled to China to perform in Universities throughout the country.  The larger production posters are located in the oversize cabinets, drawer 17, and are in chronological order. In addition, there is a folder of material from the County Stearns Theaterical Company.

Series 3: Publications, 1978-2001

This series includes newsletters and student handbooks.

Series 4: Costume Sketches, 1970s-early 1990s

Theatre faculty member Harvey Jurik created 502 costume sketches for theatre productions sponsored by St. Cloud State University, 500 which are digitized. The sketches illustrate the character costume designs as well as several scenes for various plays performed from the 1970s through the early 1990s.

The magazine is funded through an SCSU Cultural Diversity Committee allocation and is sponsored through St. Cloud State’s writing center, the Write Place.  The contributors to the magazine retain all rights to their work(s).  Kaleodiscope is published once a year.

This collection consists of 12 boxes and one oversize folder that contain the records of St. Cloud State University's radio station, KVSC-FM. The vast majority of the records relate to programming, trivia contests, and station management. The records are from 1965-2015. Additions to this collection may be ongoing.

The records are arranged in four series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1965-1990

This series contains records pertaining to budgets, station management, and publications, as well as major changes in the organizational structure, physical space, and radio engineering. The records are organized alphabetically first and then by date. Budget information includes requests, equipment purchases and alottments. This series also includes: FCC license applications, license renewals, construction applications, correspondence, records that relate to the station's power increase and switch from 88.5 to 88.1, equipment and space construction, listener surveys, and the proposal to hire a full time staff person. Publications include brochures and newsletters, as well as issues of Reverb, a music magazine published by KVSC from 1986 to 1990.

Series 2: Radio and Television Guild, 1971-1986

This series consists of meeting minutes and constitution revisions for the Radio and Television Guild, the student organization that managed the station for a time from KVSC's first day through its early years. Subjects covered in the minutes include: guild budgets, trivia contest discussions, other promotional activities, staffing, and programming decisions.

Series 3: Programming, 1967-1988

This series contains program guides and program logs from KVSC's first day on the air in May 1967 through 1971. There are some logs after 1971 here. These records provide detailed information about the type of programs broadcast by KVSC and when they aired.

Series 4: Trivia, 1980-2015

This series contains information about KVSC's annual trivia contest weekend, which began in 1980. The records include trivia answer books, t-shirts, and posters.

Materials document a variety of a topics, including freshman orientation camp at Lake Kronos, elected student officials, student dances, celebrity visits (Duke Ellington dance), Henrikson’s class schedule, honor student certificates, letters from home, Al Sirat social fraternity gatherings and events, Minerva Society socials and events, Associated Women Student (AWS) events and members, Religion in Life Week (RIL) committee members, theater, and Choral Club performances.

The papers of Michael Thomas Hinkemeyer contain various drafts of many published books, as well as papers of unpublished novels and other ideas.  The collection also includes books that he wrote using pseudonyms Vanessa Royall and Jan Lara. Published books with papers contained in this collection include The Dark Below (1974), Summer Solstice (1976), The Creator (1978), Flames of Desire (1978), Come Faith, Come Fire (1979), The Harbinger (1980), Firebrand’s Woman (1980), Lilac Night (1981), Wild Wind Westward (1982), Seize the Dawn (1983), A Time to Reap (1984), The Passionate and the Proud (1983), Fourth Down, Death (1985), Fires of Delight (1986), Limbo (1986), Soulcatchers (1990), and The Order of the Arrow (1990).

The papers show the evolution of the writing of the books, demonstrating how Hinkemeyer created, crafted, and revised the stories over time.

Series 1: Miscellaneous

This series contains a small amount of material related to Hinkemeyer’s life as well as records related to the donation and events surrounding his gift of papers to St. Cloud State University including audio and video.

Series 2: Published and Unpublished Works

The series contains drafts of many of Hinkemeyer’s published books, as well as other books that have not been published.  The unpublished books include Monahan: An American Tragedy, A Web of Time, Slow Death, and The Coming. A few books have more than one draft. These include original typescripts, handwritten revisions and other corrections.

Also in this series are uncut galley proofs for The Creator (1979) and The Harbinger (1980).

This series contains a variety of administrative records. Information relating to courses, curriculum, budgets, enrollments, graduate programs, semester conversion, and program review are found here. This series also contains records for Phi Apha Theta, History club, the now former Central Minnesota Historical Center, department newsletters, the NDEA Institute for Advanced Study, and the Northern Great Plains History Conference. Additionally, there are records pertaining to the general St. Cloud State oral history project and the writing of A Centennial History of St. Cloud State College.

Series 2: Minutes and Memorandum

This series contains records of history faculty department meeting minutes and department memorandum from 1957 to 1999.

Jon Hassler Papers

The papers of Jon Hassler contain various drafts of four published books and one unpublished manuscript, as well as drafts for a play based on a published book.  These are Staggerford (1977), Simon's Night (1979) (including a play based on this book), The Love Hunter (1981), The Book of Brendan (unpublished, early 1980s), and A Green Journey (1985).  There is also a small amount of material, including audio and video, concerning events at St. Cloud State University related to Hassler's gift of material to the University Archives.

The papers show the evolution of the writing of the books, demonstrating how Hassler created, crafted, and revised the stories over time.

Material not in series:

This material includes St. Cloud State events related to the donation by Jon Hassler (including video and audio), as well as clippings, biographical information, and images. Also included here are uncut galley proofs for Staggerford, Simon's Night, and The Love Hunter.

Series 1: Staggerford (1977)

This series contains three drafts, a copy-edited draft and a small amount of material related to Staggerford.

Series 2: Simon's Night (1979)

This series contains mostly three drafts and a copy-edited draft of Simon's Night.

Series 3: Simon's Night: A Play

Two drafts are included in this series of a play based on Simon's Night.

Series 4: The Love Hunter (1981)

Included in this series are five drafts, as well as a copy-edited typescript.

Series 5: The Book of Brendan

Never published, the Book of Brendan served as source material for Grand Opening (1987) and North of Hope (1990).  The books follow the childhood of boy Brendan Foster and his family.

This series includes at least two drafts of this unpublished manuscript, including material separated by chapter.

Series 6: A Green Journey (1985)

Included in this are five drafts of this book, as well as the galley proofs.

This collection contains records from the Evelyn Payne Hatcher Museum of Anthropology, totaling 6 boxes. The documents begin with the opening of the museum in 1973, when it was known as the St. Cloud Museum of Man.

The records date from 1972-1997.  The majority of the records pertain to museum artifacts that have been accessioned and deaccessioned.

The collection is arranged into two series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1972-1997

This series consists of documents such as correspondence and memorandum, minutes and agendas, articles of incorporation and by-laws, etc.  The subject matter of the materials focuses on the day to day operations of the museum.   There are also pamphlets and photographs for exhibits that the museum hosted, many of which were devoted to Native American culture.

Series 2: Accession and Deaccession Catalogs, 1970s-1990s

This series consists of the accession and deaccession sheets that were kept by the museum for inventory of artifacts.  The records include the date the museum acquired the items, the condition of said items, and oftentimes photographs to identify them.  If an artifact was taken out of the collection, this information was also noted and listed as a deaccession.

The Patton Papers contain mainly correspondence between the Representative and his constituents, government reports, newspaper clippings, and the minutes of the Committee on Local and Urban Affairs. The majority of these items date between 1974 and 1977. Some items of interest within the collection are: the Board of Regents 1975 Election, the Metrodome stadium Bill, and general information on the Metropolitan Stadium.

This collection contains various materials relating to James Pehler and the time in spent in public office. These materials include awards given to Pehler, correspondence between the public and other politicians, campaign materials, proposals for a domed stadium, an assortment of various educational programs supported and participated by Pehler, environmental issues he was involved in, drafts of letters to be sent out in response to public questions, a work resume, legislative pamphlets, memos, newspaper clippings, press release, the Senate Journal, and various miscellaneous materials.

The first box in this collection contains various awards, certifications, and plaques Pehler received from various organizations he supported. The awards are in various physical conditions and some are undated.

The major part of this collection is the constituent correspondence between Pehler and the public. These correspondence date between the years 1972 through 1990, and are arranged in chronological order by date. The content matter of the correspondence mostly deal with legislative matters on a wide range of topics. They provide insight to public sentiment towards prospective laws and way of life in Minnesota.

These records contain photographic materials created by the student SCSU Photo Club. These records include materials such as photos, negatives, slides, and a certificate that pertain to the Photo Club and its members, as well as other general student events and campus life.

The records are arranged in three series.

Series 1: Photo Album

Included are photographs that document Photo Club events such as the Old Fashion Photo Shoot, North Shore Trip, Santa Shoot, and others. These materials were together in bound album.

Series 2: Negative Album

Contains the negatives that document Photo Club events such as the Old Fashion Photo Shoot, Sherburne Spring Fling, Santa Shoot, and others. These materials were together in bound album.

Series 3: Images and Other Materials

This series includes photos, negatives, slides and certificate created by or given to the Photo Club students. These materials document the Photo Club members' trips and events, such as Group Pictures, Halloween Party, and canoeing. The slides document other general student activities and campus life, as well as St. Cloud State buildings.

This collection contains materials created by the Faculty Wives and Women organization ranging from their establishment in 1947 up until the year 2013.

Materials included are official meeting minutes spanning from 1960-2003, club directories from 1963-2013, treasurer/ budget reports from 1963-1989 and 1995-2008. Included are five scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and club event flyers. In the earliest scrapbook, there are early meeting notes and yearly club summaries along with the clippings from the St. Cloud Times relating to the club. Later editions of scrapbooks contain more photos and even a few obituaries of long-time members. Researchers may find this collection a helpful insight into the lives of women living on and around campus, as well as how faculty wives created ways to connect with the community.

These boxes contain records about St. Cloud State University presidential inaugurations, dating from 1966 to 2008. The presidential inaugurations included here are for the following people who held office: Robert Wick, Charles Graham, Brendan McDonald, Roy Saigo, and Earl Potter, III. Additions to these series may be ongoing.

Arranged chronologically, the main focus of the records is the preparation for the inaugurations and the ceremonies themselves. Included in the records are detailed schedules of events, press releases, invitations and guest lists.

Other material is contained here, including correspondence, reports, and audio/video of presidential inaugurations.

The Presidential Inauguration records are split into five separate series.

Series 1: Robert Wick, 1965-1971

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 14th President, Dr. Robert Wick, who held office from 1965 to 1971. The inauguration was held during the weekend of October 28th and 29th of 1966. The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra performed at this event.

The series contains a vast array of materials, which include schedules, the Inaugural Address on an audio track (reel-to-reel) in mono at 3 ¾ ips, 2 reels of film, copies of speeches, invitations and programs. The collection also includes two large scrapbooks and many 8 x 10” labeled photographs, in both matte and glossy format.

Series 2: Charles Graham, 1971-1981

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 15th President, Dr. Charles Graham, who held office from 1971 to 1981. The inauguration was held during the weekend of March 3rd and 4th of 1972. The musical performance at this ceremony was by Doc Severinsen of “The Tonight Show” fame.

The series contains materials created by the following committees: Ceremony Committee, Concerts Committee, Publicity and Printing Committee, and the Reception Committee. The series also includes 1 reel-to-reel audio track at 3 ¾ ips along with an audiocassette, press releases, a personal information sheet on Dr. Graham, newspaper clippings, memorandum, rosters, correspondence, guest lists, and invitations. Other materials include numerous letters of congratulations and certificates from local academic institutions.

Series 3: Brendan McDonald, 1982-1992

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 17th President, Dr. Brendan McDonald, who held office from 1982-1992. The inauguration was held on February 26, 1983.

The series contains materials created by the Steering Committee. It also includes one VHS and one cassette tape of the inauguration ceremony, correspondence, financial information, invitations, press releases, programs, and speeches.

Series 4: Roy Saigo, 2000-2007

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 21st President, Dr. Roy Saigo, who held office from 2000-2007. The inauguration was held on April 21, 2001.

Series 5: Earl Potter III, 2007-2016

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 22nd President, Dr. Earl H. Potter III. Contained in this series is an invitation to the inauguration ceremony and the program that was given to attendees. The inauguration was held on September 19, 2008.

Series 6: Robbyn Wacker

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 24st President, Dr. Robbyn Wacker, who held office from 2018-2024.

Only the last names starting with the letter "S" through "Z" are included.  The information not only includes a voting record but also biographical information about the voter such as: place of residence, nativity, citizenship-naturalized, parent's name and/or husband's name, and signature.

Don Samuelson Papers

The Don Samuelson Papers mainly contain correspondence, government reports and pamphlets, news releases, and the Representative’s documents from his time in office. Samuelson served in the Minnesota House of Representatves from 1969-1982 and in the Minnesota Senate from 1983-2002. The majority of the items date between 1968 and 1972. The collection consist of two series: Constituents Correspondence and Legislative Materials. In series 1, the correspondences between Samuelson and his constituents regarding an array of topics from abortion, gun control, and fluoridation legislation. In Series 2, the legislative materials from topics such as education, health, welfare, etc., concerning the Representative’s actions while elected.

Glen Sherwood Papers

The Sherwood Papers contain mainly correspondence, legislation materials, government pamphlets and reports, and newspaper clippings. The majority of the items date between 1972 and 1980. This collection is organized into two series, Constituent Correspondence and Legislative Subject Files. The constituent correspondence are the letters between Sherwood and the voting members within his district. The second series, Legislative subject files consists the topics of alcohol, drinking and driving, raising the drinking age, and fish sounder and finder legislation.

Slide Collection

This collection covers a wide variety of topics at St. Cloud State University - people, places, events, units, and athletics. The collection was created from a huge and largely unorganized mess of slides held in University Archives. During the arrangement and description process, nearly all slides were retained and placed into plastic sleeves to make the material more accessible. Since there was no organization to the slides, an artificial order was imposed on them.

Dating mostly from roughly 1985 to 1995, all slides, except for a handful, are in color. There are slides that date before and after that ten year period but the vast majority of the slides are from circa 1985 to 1995. Most slides are undated and unidentified - the slides were put into an appropriate series. Some do have dates stamped to the slides' envelope, but most are not. To date the slides, one must look at content and decide on an approximate date.

There are no specific creators but it is suspected that the University Photographer took many of the images. If not the University Photographer, the images were likely taken by other university employees for university business. Thus, the copyright is held by St. Cloud State University.

Individuals, to the best of our knowledge, were identified, with the names of the person or person known, written on the slide's envelope.

Containing nearly 21,000 slides, this collection is separated into six series. Within those series, some are divided into sub-series when appropriate.

Series 1: Athletics

The series is divided by sport and then by gender, if applicable, within the sport. Nearly all of the images are action shots of various sports. A few folders were of coaches for hockey and football.

Series 2: Buildings and Spaces

This series contains slides of mostly campus buildings and space. There are some slides that depict locations outside of campus and are not.

This series is divided into three sub-series;

Sub-series 1: General Campus

This sub-series contains slides showing campus by air, campus artwork, mostly outdoors, and campus scenes. Campus scenes show various exterior spots on campus and often contain multiple campus buildings. These slides often show people within these spaces, which focus mostly on the space.

Sub-series 2: Specific Campus Buildings and Spaces

Divided by specific campus buildings and space, these slides show most often the exterior and, sometimes, the interior of buildings. The slides are sub-divided when appropriate by folder. Some material here show the interior of campus buildings extensively, most notably Centennial Hall as a library (1971-2000). These slides show mostly students interacting with the space.

If there was a specific event associated with a campus building or space, such as groundbreakings, dedications, and cornerstone layings, the slides were placed in this series and not the Social Activities and Events series.

Sub-series 3: Non-campus Buildings and Spaces

There were some slides that showed non-campus spaces, such as downtown St. Cloud, downtown Minneapolis, and the neighborhood surrounding the campus as it grew. There are some slides that were included here that are now part of campus but when taken were not, such as those that list intersections by street names, and include those homes that stood nearby. These homes no longer stand.

Series 3: Campus Units and Organizations

This series contains materials related specifically to campus units, including departments, programs, and student groups by name.

The slides of International Studies are broken down by host country and show St. Cloud State students in various activities including their rooms, classes, field trips, and participating in social events.

Series 4: People

Sub-series 1: Individuals

This sub-series contains images of individuals. Some people had enough images to fill a sheet or two for the slides and were then given their own folders. Those identified and only had a few slides were put together into a single folder and had their names listed.

Sub-series 2: Students

This sub-series contains images of students. These students are shown together in groups, walking on campus, participating in class, studying, relaxing in their resident hall rooms, attending athletic events, participating in recreational sports, and as cheeleaders, danceline, or as the Husky mascot.

This sub-series does not contain all images of students but those that were generally identified as students outside of those images that appeared in those related to Centennial Hall, participating in study-abroad programs, or those depicted in social activities and events.

Series 5: Social Activities and Events

Filed in alphabetical order, this series contains slides from specific events such as homecoming, commencement, and registration, to politicians, musical groups, and Hollywood actors. Those folders labeled as "Campus Events" contain slides in which the specific event is unidentified.

Those identified and only had a few slides were put together into a single folder and the name of the event listed.

Series 6: Other

This series contains imagess that did not fit into any of the above categories. In this small series, the majority of the images are from the alumni publication Outlook Magazine. This material is from a series of images taken for the cover of Outlook Magazine; the people who do appear in the images are identified as well as the date they were published.

Stewart Hall Time Capsule

This collection contains the content of a time capsule placed near the cornerstone of Stewart Hall. The cornerstone ceremony was held in mid-May 1948. The time capsule was placed in a 9 inch by 9 inch lead lined copper box.

Nearly all of the material has been published, including a 1944 college history, two copies of the Chronicle student newspaper, and course catalogs for 1947/48 and summer of 1948. Also included here is a May 1948 letter from Warren Stewart, namesake of the building, and two lists containing the signatures of 47 St. Cloud State faculy members and 994 students from the spring quarter of 1948.

Also included here is a folder containing information about the May 1948 cornerstone ceremony, a 1989 clipping about the missing time capsule, and an October 1992 press release regarding the circumstances of its discovery and return to St. Cloud State.

The copper box is still intact but severely damaged.

John and Henry Sullivan Papers

The Sullivan papers consist of the papers of two Minnesota state representatives newspaper clippings about the activities of these men and their time in office, and political advertisements. The majority of the items date between 1911 and 1954. The collection consists of four folders: a biography, newspaper clippings, political advertisements, and obituary and memoriam.

Records of the University Photographer

This collection contains photographic negatives taken by the University Photographer, or at least someone in Information Services (later known as University Communications) early on. Nearly all of the negatives remain unpublished. The images cover a wide possible variety of topics - athletics, buildings and grounds, events, and people from 1962 to 2004. Because the images were taken by St. Cloud State employees, St. Cloud State clearly owns the copyright.

Negatives are scant here after 2001, presumbly due to the advent of digital photography.

The negatives of the images are filed by job number with a short title; keywords may appear in the description field, especially for buildings and people if known. If any image was published and recognized, the name of the publication and date were recorded in the description field as well. Many more were likely published but not identified as such.

Nearly all negatives are on 35mm film, though other sizes, such as 2.5 x 2.5 inches and 4 x 5 inches, are present.

Most jobs have contact sheets after 1970 - those before likely do not.

Before 1991, nearly all of the images are black and white. Those images that are in color before 1991 are indicated.  From 1991 and after, most of the negatives are in color, and are almost exclusively in color as time passed.  These images after 1991 are not indicated as color.

Edited by Francis and Ludmilla (Mil) Voelker, the papers are centered around the collection, creation, editing, and publishing of three editions of Mass Media: Forces in Our Society. The first edition was a publishing trend-setter, making articles by professionals in all areas of media readily available in one attractively designed source. The second edition received a Certificate of Excellence from the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was selected in the 1975 AIGA Learning Materials Show as one of 50 best designed books published that year.  The third and final edition appeared in 1978.

The collection contains biographical information gathered by Ed Pluth regarding the various members of the subject’s family. The main attraction to this collection is the “The Girl Graduate” scrapbook which was includes countless photos and artifacts of Maurine Bailey’s life on St. Cloud State from June 1921 to fall 1922. Materials included in the book are Lawrence Hall dormitory regulations, State Teachers College picture booklet, personal messages from dormmates, many regarding Bailey as ‘Sub’, Bailey’s class schedules, Normal School Library manual, fall 1922 class schedule, and 1921 commencement exercises. In addtion, the scrapbook contains marriage announcements from friends, activity tickets, and calling cards of Lawrence Hall girls. This collection provides a wide range of interests to perspective scholars and researchers alike when looking at college life and experience in the early 1920s.

Dudley Brainard Family Letters

These 142 letters were written between Virginia Brainard and her parents Dudley and Merl Brainard between 1939 and 1949. There are a small number of letters not between daughter and parents, but letters written about the Brainard family and a few other significant letters, such as the letter sent by author Sinclair Lewis to Dudley.

At Iowa State

Dating between 1940 and 1943 while attending Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, these letters are mostly written and mailed by Virginia Brainard to her parents, Dudley and Merl Brainard. She candidly wrote her family about possibly anything and everything, especially adjustments to social life, dating, school, political discussions, her friends and roommates, food, clothing, hygiene, mental health, and various information about her siblings (Connie, Eleanor, Charles, and Edward), her parents, and other family members.

Virginia had immense concern over grades and classes. Money was especially a common worry, needed class expenses, housing, fees, books, personals, clothing, etc. Virginia often wrote about her desire and passion for her journalism classes and writing stories for the student newspaper Iowa State Daily Student. She was also extremely proud when her father Dudley was appointed St. Cloud State president in early 1943.

Going to school during World War II, Virginia also offered insights to the anxieties of young adults and how rationing, army training and the drafting of young men affected Iowa State.

In 1943, Virginia graduated with a degree in Journalism and Home Economics.

After Iowa State

Letters written between the years of 1944 to 1949 were mostly from Dudley and Merl to Virginia. There is a small portion of letters from non-family members and military officials, including Sinclair Lewis, US Navy, and Major Julian Gist.

For the entire year of 1949, the letters are exclusively from Dudley and Merl to Virginia. They generally report of their daily lives, issues, and people they see. The letters are extremely candid about the other Brainard children, especially about how they are each doing in school and their personal lives. Dudley and Merl were extremely proud of Virginia in her accomplishments in journalism and for her future.

Andrew A. Brown Papers

This collection consists of three folders of papers of Andrew A. Brown. Brown lived in Douglas County and dealt in buying and selling land. There are numerous land grants and certificates. Also of interest are the correspondence from John Lind, who was a US congressman, a death certificate of Brown's wife, and a photograph of the family.

The collection consists of numerous records pertaining to the commencement and dissolution of the Central Minnesota Historical Assembly. The records contain information describing the organization’s intentions to bring various historical societies around Central Minnesota together for mutual growth, development, and training in the field of historical and cultural preservation. The records also include information concerning day-to-day operations, including plans for meetings and luncheons, membership lists, income and expenses, administration reports, and local historical societies’ newsletters and programs.

The graduate catalog represents the most official publication of St. Cloud State. Dating back to 1953, the catalog describes the purpose of the university, admission requirements, classes and class descriptions, tuition and fees, buildings and grounds, and faculty.

Starting with the 2012/14 general catalog, both the graduate and undergraduate catalogs were combined together.  This catalog is found with the undergraduate catalogs.

The final graduate catalog goes to 2009.

Established in 1964, the records of the Center for Economic Education, span from 1963, a year before its creation, until 2018. The materials here include administrative records, alumni and faculty publications, and materials from the Winter Institute.

Series 1: Administration

This series has administrative records. These records include annual reports, funding reports, program reviews, general overviews of the program, and workshop information.

Series 2: Publications

This series contains publications written by the Center for Economic Education alumni and faculty such as economic reports and teaching tools for grades K-12.

Series 3: Winter Institute

This series contains a range of information about the Winter Institute that was held from 1963-2018. Materials include program brochures, flyers, and miscellaneous materials dating from 1969 to 2018.

Also included here are VHS tapes dating from 1987 to 1997. These tapes were recorded of the keynote speaker, panel sessions, or other events at the Winter Institute. No release forms were provided so the tapes can only be viewed in Archives.

The Winter Institute has offered high-quality educational programming with renowned speakers and thought provoking ideas. In addition, there were accessible economic education sessions for a general audience as well as targeted economic education sessions for K-12 educators.
